Bellbirds a la Malaysian by Hyacinth Jones Colourful lanterns at the entrance archway and above the bandstand, and little candles scattered on the pink and red tables created a warm welcome to a very successful and enjoyable night. A handful of petals of purple and white orchids added a further touch of freshness to the Malaysian Night. The guests (nearly 150) made it by seven o’clock on that chilly Saturday night of May 28 to North Ryde School of Arts hall and were warmly greeted and escorted to their tables by a cheerful committee. Everyone expects the Bellbirds to put on a “SHOW” and they were not disappointed. The Malaysian night was casual, friendly and very enjoyable according to the feedback from guests. Gordon Rebeira came up with some toe-tapping, heart–throbbing music and there wasn’t a hint of the cold weather in the warmth inside the venue. Nihara Loos, adding a fine touch with her vocals at the end of the night, was well received. The entree, a la Malaysia maintained the warmth to the right degree. The Beef Rendang was delicious as was the Chicken, Vegetables and Rice dishes to name a few. The dessert buffet was a talking point with everyone trying to guess what it was. Sri Lankans were able to recognise a similarity to “Pani Pol”. The chocolaty pudding was also very nice. The ambience of friendliness and camaraderie was continued throughout the evening. A rollicking time was had by all. A very delighted President Angela Jansz greeted everyone with her usual charm, briefly summarising upcoming events of the Club with special emphasis on 2017. The Bellbirds will be celebrating the Club’s 50th Birthday. This makes The Bellbirds Club one of the oldest social clubs in NSW. It will be a Golden occasion when the Gala Jubilee Dance will take place at The Epping Club on March 25, 2017. Please keep this date free. Yes, the Bellbirds know how to do it. What with almost 50 years of supporting Charities in Australia and Sri Lanka by holding dances, outings, tours to Sri Lanka and other social events, they have acquired a fine knack of ensuring guests always get value for money. If feedback from guests is of anything to go by, what we all heard, to sum up, was: “Great night! Great Music and delicious Food with a Malaysian flavour.” This summation is indeed a tribute to the considerable planning and hard physical work put in by the President Angela, her admirable committee, not to mention the invaluable assistance of their spouses, members and friends.
Their Seniors are a much-loved breed of the Bellbirds. That is why each year the club dedicates a special day to pay tribute to these members many of whom, for 49-years now, dedicated their time and effort to make sure the club continued an unbroken era of activities for its ever-increasing membership. That is the reason the Committee spared no time, effort and cost to honour 80 of their seniors on Saturday 19th March at the Eastwood Community Centre in Shaftsbury Road.
President Angela Jansz welcomed the guests recalling that the month of March was very special to the Bellbirds because it was in March 1967 that the Bellbirds Club was born. In 2017 the Club will reach a half-century of life and the anniversary will be remembered in a fitting manner. Founder members and those pioneers from early years will be recognised and as many of the descendents of those not with us will be warmly welcomed to participate in the celebrations. Continue reading
